Beyond Numbers: Ensuring Diversity Impacts Decisions

We have a diverse team” might be the riskiest sentence in your boardroom. Not because it is untrue. Because of what it lets you stop asking.

Once a board or an executive team believes diversity is handled, it stops watching the thing that matters: whether that diversity changes any decisions.

You can count the backgrounds around your table and feel reassured. Meanwhile the same one person does the challenging, the difficult perspective gets set aside, and the group settles as fast as it ever did. The composition changed. The thinking did not.

The teams most exposed to a bad call are often the ones most confident they have diversity covered, because they counted the people and stopped counting the thinking.

Representation is worth having. It is part of the work, not the proof it is done.

The better question is not “how diverse are we?” It is “how much of that diversity reaches our decisions?”
