Social media platforms are quick to assure users that their algorithms are neutral. That the code simply organizes content objectively, without prejudice. On the surface, it sounds convincing. After all, algorithms run on logic, data, and rules; they don’t have feelings, opinions, or agendas.
But algorithms are designed, trained, and maintained by humans. Humans who carry assumptions, preferences, and biases, often unconsciously. Even when no one intends to be biased, these human decisions are baked into the system, shaping what content gets seen, shared, or promoted.
