Trish Goodfield working out at Gym for writing success

Showing Up

The Gym Spots My Writing Process

Some people go to the gym for strength. I go for clarity.

Every breath in—fresh ideas, unexpected connections, clarity for the book I’m writing.
Every breath out—edits, doubts, the occasional WTF was I thinking? moment.

Lifting weights? That’s just resistance training for my brain. Pushing through reps reminds me that ideas need refining. Not everything works on the first attempt, and sometimes, the best thing you can do is step back, breathe, and try again.

Treadmill time? It’s where random thoughts turn into structured chapters. Moving forward physically seems to unlock momentum mentally.

And just like writing, some gym days feel effortless. Others feel like dragging words uphill in the rain. But showing up—whether to the page or the squat rack—is what matters.
