Diversity of Thought in the Media #1

Diversity of Thought has been everywhere in the media this past week, though no one’s actually called it that.

Last Wednesday, The Australian quoted Deakin University Vice Chancellor Iain Martin, ‘it our duty to make students ready for challenging ideas not to make these ideas safe’ and ‘in a polarised world campuses must be a place where ideas are tested’.

The very next day, The Australian again reported that the University of Canberra’s Vice Chancellor Bill Shorten said, “Its ok to disagree” and “there’s polarisation where people sit in their own echo chambers talking to each other”.

Then on Monday, The Financial Review ran a piece by Arian Neiron, CEO of VanEck, who wrote, ‘
“we are drowning in data but starving for perspective”, later adding, ‘The Ethics of the Fathers reminds us the wise learn from everyone”.

Three leaders. Three voices. One message; difference isn’t the problem. Our fear of it is.

If we can learn from everyone, maybe it’s time we finally started listening and acting with Diversity of Thought.
